Andrew Mc Donald: the Stacks of Errimore – REUNITING ERRIMORE and CROTTA (3 of 6)

THE REUNITING OF ERRIMORE AND CROTTA

It was also in about the mid 1500s that another branch of the Errimore Stacks, known as “De Stack” had been in possession of the Crotta Estate for some generations. The head of that Branch, Richard de Stack, was without male heir and had had three daughters by his wife, “O’Daly’s daughter”. The eldest daughter, named Joan De Stack, married John Stack of Errimore and their son Thomas was raised at Crotta.

There was clearly an expectation that Richard De Stack must sire an heir, as it is said that following the birth of his third daughter Richard De Stack was against his will “obliged to take a Lady of Lixnaw to his wife, and O’Daly’s Daughter went home”. It seems that a son named John De Stack was eventually born of this “obliged” union, but he did not inherit the estate before his father Richard passed away. As a consequence the ownership of Crotta was the subject of dispute for many years. Eventually, John De Stack the last of the De Stacks of Crotta was married to Mary, daughter to Maurice Stack of Kelad by whom he left one daughter

  1. The saga continues………this is really interesting, Andrew. I wish you were in my line of Stack’s as I could use your researching skills! Did Richard De Stack never see his first wife again? Tough crowd. She is sent away because she can’t produce a male, yet my Irish ancestors all had about ten children, so plenty of males and females. Kelad was where Lt. Edward Stack was born, but where did that village go?

    1. Yes, I wondered that too! There are some fascinating stories to be found briefly mentioned in the manuscript – even the ritual blinding of a Baron of Lixnau so that he could no longer lead his people (ie shades of Gloucester in William Shakespeare’s play King Lear!)

  2. Andrew
I just now saw your comment about the Murhur burial ground near the land of Kelad being the area that my ancestors came from. Indeed my GGF Richard Stack b:1856 and his wife Margaret McCarthy are buried there. Other older ancestors are from the Newtownsandes and Aughrim area. My oldest possible ancestors are identified in the Tralee Baptismal records as far back as c 1740. As your discussion centers around the mid 16th century do you think it possible that my ancestors may have been related to Maurice of Kelad? I have not been able to identify any possible connection of my ancestors to your Stacks of Errimore and Crotta.

      1. Looking at the 1659 Irish Census there are 10 Stack Familie(?) slisted as prominent Irish surnames in the Iraghticonnor Barony which includes Parish Murhur. There are 17 Stack Families listed in the Clanmaurice Barony which includes Errimore. Errimore had coincidently 17 Irish families (?) listed probably all of which were the Stack clan. I would assume there were less Stack families (2-4) in the 1550 time frame in Murhur Parish that you have identified. Thus Maurice Stack of Kelad is indeed a likely relative of my Stack Clan. He must have been of some means to offer a daughter as a wife to John De Stack as the De Stacks of Crotta were a prestigious landed gentry. Do you know anything more about Maurice of Kelad or a recommendation for me of where to start to search? He must have had a pedigree.
